I'm Proactively Lazy, [FIRST NAME GOES HERE]. Are you?

Hi Reader,

I just finished reading Atomic Habits by James Clear. I'm actually not a big fan of "self-help" and business motivation books.I find them frustrating more than motivational. And I usually read before bed, which is NOT when I want to read such things.

A friend of mine, however, has a practice of reading 10 minutes of nonfiction first thing in the morning...so I thought I'd give it a try.

Full disclosure, I took up this book as a suggestion because one of my biggest professional weaknesses is engaging on Instagram. By nature, I'm not on the platform much (I hate to admit this to you, but I could fairly easily live without social media - or so much and many of them at least). I'm also not a commenter.

I'm likely to scroll my feed over watching stories and I'm never on the reels tab by choice. But, as it turns out, my job is dependent on me being more active and proactive on IG. I realize it's probably the simplest chore I would need to do for work, but I would literally rather do anything else. 😬

Anyway, so I ordered Atomic Habits from a local bookstore and made myself read it for the first 10 minutes after I sit down to my desk in the morning. And it's been great. I don't know if it'll be a constant practice, but a good one nonetheless.

It was an interesting read. First, habit stacking - putting a habit you want to adopt with a habit you do anyway. So I started doing 10 minutes of IG engagement after my 10 minutes of reading. I started my day feeling quite productive.

Second, environment dictates habits. Certain settings make your brain think of a habit of some kind. Meeting friends = getting coffee. Cooking dinner makes me start to crave wine.

Third, I'm proactively lazy!

Now, anybody who knows me will say that I'm not lazy, but I kind of am...I like to take care of things right away because I don't want to do them later.

I don't leave dishes at my desk for long because I don't want to have to look at them and think about how I haven't put them in the kitchen. I wash my face hours before bed so I don't have to do it when I'm tired (and when I have to do my 20 minute teeth cleaning routine - I'm over my braces!).

Lots of things like this - all day long. And I say it's because I'm lazy. I don't wanna have to do it later (likely with more work or under duress). But, apparently, proactive laziness is a thing - and it's my thing!!

So. Are you proactively lazy?

xo,

Luci

Hi Reader, My husband and I quote a lot of movies - dumb movies and great movies. Kid movies and classic movies. One of our most quoted? "The last melon" from Ice Age. The animals encounter a colony of Dodo birds prepping for the Ice Age. They have one female, who sadly meets her demise, and 3 watermelons to last them "underground for a billion, billion years." Pretty soon they're down to the last melon....and then no more melons (or Dodo birds for that matter). So with that silly mindset,...

Hi Reader, The weather finally turned this week. We've had chilly mornings, some rain even (yay!) and I'm starting to look for the layers I have packed away in my winter clothes storage!! I wasn't sure I was ready for cool weather, but it feels good. I want to hang onto this early Fall for a while now!! A few fun things to share. We visited Chico, California last weekend. I grew up 20 minutes away and am back frequently, but my husband and I got to play tourist and had a lot of new...
