N-of-1 Experiments {And other non-mathematical things}

Hi Reader,

I just started reading another non-fiction book - Liz Moody's 100 Ways to Change Your Life. I'm not very far in, so I don't have a review yet, but there's a chapter (all of which are 2-3 pages by the way) about doing N-of-1 experiments and it resonated loudly with me.

Basically the idea is that while an idea, practice, or belief might work for many people, it may not work for YOU. It encourages you to do an N-of-1 experiment where there is only one person (you) in the experiment and it either works for you or it doesn't. It doesn't matter if what works or doesn't work for you is the same as your friend or favorite blogger. Your results are the only thing that matter.

That's it. That's the end of the math lesson.

I talked a few months ago about knowing who I am and being confident in who that person is. Not that I don't have faults but that I understand who I am and what I feel...all of which has come from accepting the "results" of my N-of-1 experimenting.

That is to say, I listen to the results of what works for me and what doesn't. I know I can eat a fair amount of cheese, but my body really doesn't like a lot of melted cheese - no scientific backing there.

I know that soy is a popular option for many people, but my body hates it and gives me migraines.

I know that I can't read or watch stories about drug use/abuse because it plays over and over in my head.

And I now that I don't want to read books with social media (see last week's conversation about my feelings on social media).

I could go on with a useless list of things solely about me, but who cares honestly?! You need to care about you.

The thing I always try to remember too is that the N-of-1 is true for everyONE. A simple example that comes to mind is that of our entire trip to Scotland last year, Conrad found the most enjoyment out of seeing a garbage truck on the Hebrides Islands and watching it board a ferry.

In fact, for our upcoming trip to Ireland, he's most looking forward to getting on a plane and seeing dump trucks during our stay. Neither of those items are listed as highlights in our guide book or on the websites I've visited, but that's what brings HIM joy.

So. What works for you and what brings you joy??

xo,
Luci

Hi Reader, My husband and I quote a lot of movies - dumb movies and great movies. Kid movies and classic movies. One of our most quoted? "The last melon" from Ice Age. The animals encounter a colony of Dodo birds prepping for the Ice Age. They have one female, who sadly meets her demise, and 3 watermelons to last them "underground for a billion, billion years." Pretty soon they're down to the last melon....and then no more melons (or Dodo birds for that matter). So with that silly mindset,...

Hi Reader, The weather finally turned this week. We've had chilly mornings, some rain even (yay!) and I'm starting to look for the layers I have packed away in my winter clothes storage!! I wasn't sure I was ready for cool weather, but it feels good. I want to hang onto this early Fall for a while now!! A few fun things to share. We visited Chico, California last weekend. I grew up 20 minutes away and am back frequently, but my husband and I got to play tourist and had a lot of new...
